Looking into the future, Buddha described our present age as a time of spiritual degeneration. One of the signs of this degeneration is that humans will increasingly be in conflict with one another. Unfortunately, there is ample evidence of increasing disharmony throughout our modern society. The remedy is to learn how to remain in harmony with our family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and anyone we meet. Without such knowledge and practice, we shall succumb to quarreling, resentment, and possible violent responses. We must not allow this to happen. Since harmony with others naturally brings us a happy life, if we are wise we shall gladly learn the path of harmony.

If we cultivate our wisdom we shall be able to accomplish any spiritual goal. This is because wisdom provides both the power to inspire us and the power to apply continuous effort that gives rise to the fruit of spiritual attainments. If we lack wisdom we shall flounder in confusion and doubt, and thereby never apply sufficient effort to realize our spiritual potential. Wisdom is a rare quality within the human mind, as evidenced by the fact that we continue to suffer life after life with no freedom or choice. Wisdom provides us with the freedom and choice of avoiding all suffering. Therefore, the development of wisdom is paramount.
