With the advent of a new year it is traditional to make resolutions to try and improve one’s life. Usually such resolutions concern worldly improvements like a healthier lifestyle, financial stability, or more satisfying relationships. There is nothing wrong with such resolutions, but if we make spiritual resolutions, these ultimately lead to a permanent cessation of all problems and suffering. Since we are a traveler bound for future lives, it makes sense to eliminate, as much as possible, any suffering that may arise in our future lives. Even though spiritual resolutions are focused mainly on the welfare of future lives, we still experience great benefits in this life. Now is the time to make spiritual resolutions and boldly secure future happiness.

Due to ever changing circumstances, it is not possible for ordinary beings to avoid a troubled mind from time to time. When this happens, it is not uncommon to seek refuge in drugs, alcohol, a myriad of other types of distraction, or even suicide. This strategy of avoidance only leads to many more problems. If we wish to overcome uncomfortable situations and feelings, we need to gradually improve our mind so that we can permanently liberate it from our habits of mental despair. If we conquer our inner problems, we naturally shall become a very powerful being.
